 Indwelling catheters or Foley catheters are closed systems that allow urine to drain from the bladder into a collection bag. This type of permanent catheter is usually inserted by a health care professional. A water filled balloon holds the catheter in place in the bladder long term. 

Permanent catheterization sometimes involves problems or difficulties, especially when the catheter is first put in place and used. Some patients experience spasms or a burning sensation when urine passes from the bladder through the catheter. Spasms can cause leakage of urine around the catheter, or they may even cause the catheter to fall out. Although spasms aren’t uncommon, medications may be prescribed to help control or eliminate spasms that are discomforting or troublesome.

Foley catheters may fall out for other reasons besides spasms. An individual may accidentally pull the catheter out. It can take some time to adjust to avoiding the type of movements that can inadvertently pull a catheter out of place.

It isn’t uncommon for urine leakage to occur around the catheter, and in fact it happens to most people. Bladder spasms may cause leakage, as can infection or irritation from long-term catheter use. The size of the catheter or balloon may need to adjusted down if the catheter falls out when leakage occurs. Although some leakage is common, continual catheter leakage should be treated medically.

Urinary tract infections are another common problem associated with long-term, permanent catheter use. Bacteria in the urine can cause leakage around the catheter. Blood may be present in the urine, or urine may take on a cloudy appearance or have a stronger than usual scent. Flu like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, chills and even vomiting can also occur with urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections can be treated with antibiotics to prevent the infection from spreading or becoming more severe.
